Well!: The Eurovision Song Contest: another year of raised expectations! But there was an interesting, underlying question.. How would all those on the other side of the Channel react to us this year? Lovely Terry W. must have been chortling on his cloud, as the eventual result seemed to speak volumes about the general feeling of all our near neighbours abroad...and so, the question remains, to slightly misquote The Clash - ‘Should we stay or should we go?’ !! Not exactly an appropriate way to come to such an enormous decision in the EU referendum... but some might say it’s as good a way as any! However, I feel for Joe and Jake, our UK entry, theirs was always a very steep mountain to climb...I wonder if the rest of Europe, and Australia...no, I don’t get it either.. would mind if we didn’t bother with the competition any more...especially if the UK took it’s financial contribution and technical broadcasting expertise away too...?! Anyway, moving on, but keeping a music theme... at the Ninfield Carnival Association meeting on the 11th, a lot of things were finalised for the next two big events. The first, the Afternoon Tea and Cabaret on the 12th June; and all is going to plan, the Show is being rehearsed in Brighton (and if the five of us can get through it without dissolving into hysterics it’ll be a miracle!!), the Invitations are being delivered from this weekend and the Sherry/ Prosecco is being sourced as I type! Then - the big one- The Carnival weekend of July 15th and 16th. It was decided to do a completely new event on the Friday evening, in the main Marquee; so it will be a Music Night, with a Big, fun Quiz for all the family, a ‘Name that Tune’ section, and a Disco with Sound and Light show. All Quizzers get your ‘sounds’ sorted and put the 15th of July in your Diaries! The band, ‘The Blocks’ are the act booked for the Saturday evening, another first for Ninfield! And, if that isn’t enough! - The tickets are now on sale for The Ninfield Prom and Gig, 29th and 30th July, organised by the Bonfire Society, and again it’s going to be an absolutely fabulous Musical Extravaganza! All very exciting...but first... !
Ninfield Working Men’s Club: It’s Quiz Night! This Saturday, 21st May from 7pm at the Tin Hut....so find those brain-boxes, have a quick slug from the fountain of knowledge and head down to the club for a fun evening. You don’t have to go with a ready, prepared team, there are always tables made up on the night, and it’s a great way to meet people; no pressure, just a lot of laughs! You’ll be made very welcome by new Chairman, Merlin; with Maggie, Charlie and all of the committee making sure that everyone has a great time.
Ninfield Action Group: On this coming Monday. the 23rd, at the Reading Room in Church Lane, from 7.30pm ; the next meeting of N.A.G will be updating everyone on the latest information to come out from Wealden District Council, with regard to the proposed new housing numbers. Following on from the Annual Parish Meeting, the area co-ordinators will be able to focus their reports and give more extensive details on the sites they are looking at. There are rumours abounding which will be completely scotched, and the correct information will be confirmed, again, to help alleviate some of the panic and worry that has recently been unfairly created. Ninfield Methodist Church: Has it’s next Messy Church, for young people and families, on Wednesday 25th May from 3.30-5.30pm. They will be exploring the theme of ‘Special Days’, and there will be plenty of activities, crafts, celebration and food. Everyone is very welcome to go along and have some fun!
Hooe Open Group: Thanks to Edna and Nicki for forwarding their latest report from the meeting last Friday 13th May...’Although the date was ominous, the omen for the day was extremely positive, very upbeat with lots of friendly banter. Another new member joined, extending the lively group even further, and everyone enjoyed the afternoon. The speaker was a representative from the local branch of the Red Cross, who gave a fascinating overview of the foundation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent movement in 1863 by the Swiss philanthropist Henry Dunant. From the period of the two world wars, to the present day, these groups have provided extensive, invaluable support both Nationally and Internationally; and as gesture of thanks, the Ladies of the Open Group gave a cheque for £30, for the speaker to pass on to the organisations, as a donation. The next meeting of the Hooe Open Group is on Friday 10th June, 2.30pm, when there will be Cream Teas, a Quiz and lots more fun to be had! Call Edna on 01424 842591 for more details.’
Ninfield Bowls Club: It’s getting busy in the Club now, with three matches played over the last week. Thanks to Carole for the following results; Wednesday 11th May at home- Ninfield 50- Pett 73. Saturday 14th, Rother League match at Westfield- Ninfield 49 - Westfield 82. Sunday 15th at home - Ninfield 76 - Observer 59...That’s a much better result!
