FILM CLUB: The Hunt directed by Thomas Vinterberg is this month’s film, starring Mads Mikkelsen. He won the best actor award at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival for his portrayal of Lucas a former school teacher facing various tough problems in his life. This Danish drama has subtitles. Doors open at 7pm next Friday at the village hall for coffee and cake. Guests are welcome for £6 on the door and there is no need to book.


JUMBLE: Tomorrow, Saturday, afternoon at 2pm, the girls of the Burwash Brownie and Guide group will be holding one of their famous jumble sales. Stalls will include jumble, good as new, bric-a-brac, tombola, cakes teas etc. Items for the stalls can be left in the foyer on Saturday morning or call Jackie Ashdown on 01435 882196.

RACE: The Junior Sport and Fitness Club are organising a run in aid of Sport Relief tomorrow, Saturday, morning at the Swan Meadow Playing fields. They have measured the run and it will take in 5 laps of the field. They would be delighted to see as many people there as possible to join in the run or just to encourage others. LUNCH: Age UK Burwash branch lunch club will meet on Monday at the Bear Motel for their monthly lunch. This is open to anyone over 55 years old and costs £8 for a delicious fresh cooked meal. MEETING: Burwash and District Housing Association for the Elderly will have their AGM on Wednesday evening in the village hall from 6pm. The association are responsible for some housing in Burwash and Burwash Common. There is a lovely potted history of how the housing association began in the St Bartholomew’s church magazine this month and makes interesting reading. You are all very welcome to go along and take part in the meeting and help this wonderful organisation who try to house people who would most likely end up leaving the villages. The meeting is at 6pm.

SOUP: On Thursday there will be another soup lunch in the village hall from 12.30pm. This is by request of one of our older members who asked if I would do another one, so I would be really delighted if you were able to come along and support it. Entry is £7.50 and includes trying as many of the delicious variety of homemade soups and desserts as you wish. There will also be a raffle and win a go tombola. These simple lunches are very popular and a lovely way to meet up with friends - old and new and have a chat over a bowl of warming soup, roll and cheese. RACE NIGHT: East Hoathly and Halland Twinning Association is pleased to announce their sixth annual Race-Night in aid of Twinning Funds, St Peter and St James and St Wilfrid’s Hospices. It will take place in the village hall on Saturday March 29 at 7pm for 7.30pm. Entry will cost £12.50 for adults and children (under 16), £5. The ticket price includes a substantial French farmhouse supper, a vegetarian option will also be available. SHORT MAT BOWLS: On Saturday March 15 our club held its annual Match Day in the village hall when the competitions for the triples, pairs and singles were held. Sadly due to the unavailability of some members and one or two crocks our numbers were down this year. However, Vic Tidswell our club captain quickly re-jigged our usual format and we had great all-day meet with plenty of play for all the members - perhaps rather more than usual for some. The triples took the form of a round-robin competition with the two most successful trios playing the final. During a long and entertaining day of bowling - interspersed only with morning coffee and biscuits, a pleasant lunch and then afternoon tea and cakes provided by Rosemary and her helpers the results were finally settled. The singles winner was Steve Hunt who beat Jan Soane in a hard fought final. Steve Hunt and Jan Soane had previously combined to best Vic Tidswell and Jean More to win the doubles. In the triples Jan and Malcolm Soane with Rosemary Akehurst were narrowly beaten by Roger More, Vic Tidswell and Steve Hunt (again) who, it has to be said, had a rather good day. Perhaps the icing on the cake was being able to use our new mat-winding machine that arrived just in time for the day courtesy of a grant from Action in Rural Sussex for which we are very grateful. Anyone interested in joining the club should take advantage of our open invitation to come and try it at either our Wednesday evening meeting at 7.30pm or the Monday afternoon one at 2.30pm. You will be warmly welcomed and no experience or equipment is needed, we will provide both to start with.

ELECTION: There’s a parish council election on March 27 to fill two vacancies in the Heathfield Ward. If you normally vote at Broad Oak village hall, St Richard’s Church Hall or Heathfield Youth Centre you are eligible to vote, do go along to your polling station. It’s not my job to extol the merits of one or other of the candidates, but one of them did show initiative by putting her personal CV through my letterbox. Penny Kift explained that the parish council has allowed candidates to place their details in the High Street office, so if you would like to read a little about each of them, make sure you call in. You can also view them on the parish council website: And do vote. How would you feel if someone told you that you were not allowed to? You’d be furious, so make the most of your democratic right.

PLANES: At the time of writing, we’ve just enjoyed a wonderfully sunny day to get to grips with the garden. The only cloud on the horizon was the noise from endless small aircraft buzzing overhead. Worse, helicopters (I don’t know whether they are police craft or the air ambulance) have criss-crossed the garden at least seven times today. Perhaps they are practising their technique? Even so, it’s a bit rich on a Sunday. I’m sure the attraction was not Mrs PP sunbathing.

SPORT RELIEF: They’re even doing it on The Archers. The Sport Relief Mile takes place on Sunday and local people may be interested to know there’s a chance to take part in Horam. (I don’t think we have a Horam Parish Pump correspondent, so I hope you’ll excuse my getting involved on their behalf) Horam councillor Susan Stedman is organising the Horam mile for the third year running with the support of Horam Parish Council. As last year, competitors will begin their course at the old Horam station and they can walk or run one, three or six miles. There will be stewards along the trail at each turning point. Sport Relief also provide bottled water which is available along the route. The mile starts at midday but Susan will be on hand from 10.30am onwards giving plenty of time for competitors to sign in and warm up. INFORMATION EVENT: Heathfield and Waldron Parish Council in Partnership with Southeast Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust are organising an NHS emergency information event. Everyone is invited to go along and hear about how the ambulance service responds to emergency 999 calls. It takes place on Tuesday from 6.30pm to 8.45pm at Heathfield Community Centre. At the event you can hear from James Pave, senior operations manager, Brighton and Rother Operational Dispatch Area for SECAMB; hear details of the NHS 111 service which you call when you need medical help fast but it is not a 999 emergency; Tim Williams, chair of the Heathfield and Waldron First Responder Scheme; the Air Ambulance Trust and the South East Coast Ambulance Service Public Governor for East Sussex. There will also be opportunities to ask questions and visit the display stands from the various services at the event. The aim is to raise awareness of how the Ambulance Service responds to NHS emergency 999 calls. Refreshments will be available. HEATHFIELD SHOW: This is the first of several pieces of information about the 2014 Heathfield Show, well known as the top agricultural show in the South East and, in our opinion, unmissable! (We even organise our holidays to ensure we are in Heathfield for the day). It takes place this year on Saturday, May 24 at Little Tottingworth Farm, Broad Oak, and has now launched an on line booking facility on its web site ( for all livestock and horse entries. The web site is now fully interactive allowing exhibitors to enter their classes, visitors to purchase tickets and members to join, on line. In order to make sure the on line facility meets everybody’s requirements the show society is asking for feedback on using the on line facility and in return is offering a lucky winner the prize of free membership to the person whose name is pulled out of the hat on April 9. This membership will gain the winner free access to the show and use of the members’ facilities this year. No late entries will be accepted. Every year the show evolves and this year organisers are excited to say that they are re-introducing the Poultry section. The Country Ways area will be full of local artisans demonstrating their skills including a wheelwright, spinner, bee keeper and blacksmiths. With the WI marquee returning for its second year and the Farmers’Market selling all local produce and the Made in the Weald craft fair there will a huge demonstration of the produce of our beautiful Wealden countryside. The main ring attraction will once more be a show stopping event. With skill and high risk precision movements, visitors will be in awe of the skills being displayed by Jason Smythe’s Adrenalin Tour in the main ring.

ACTIVE KIDS: The 10th year of Sainsbury’s Active Kids scheme has been launched at Sainsbury’s Heathfield. Customers can now collect vouches in-store and help registered schools, groups and clubs across Heathfield to receive equipment and experiences. To celebrate the launch of this year’s scheme, Chris Sharp, store manager and Tracey Caddick, PR ambassador went to Cross-in-Hand School on behalf of their colleagues to donate two bikes to the reception classes. Sainsbury’s customers have until May 20 to collect vouchers. THE AGM of the Heathfield Twinning Association takes place at 7.30pm in the Ian Price Room, Heathfield Community Centre on March 29. Everyone is welcome and it’s a chance to find out about this lively group. Summing up the year in her report, Chair Gill Temple says the highlights of the year were a visit from combined choral societies from the Pays de Bray organised by the Heathfield Choral Society; a skittles evening at The \Royal Oak, Barcombe during a visit from twin town Forges les Eaux residents in September; a visit to Hever Castle; the group’s visit to Forges earlier in the year and a cycle trip from students along the Avneue Verte and the Cuckoo Trail which coincided with the food fair in Waldron. Gill says Francine Duponchel is a loyal supporter of Le Marché and once again came with her Normandy cheeses, melons, peaches and artichokes. The quiz in October once again was an occasion to raise funds and have fun at the same time. And she concluded: ‘Don’t forget our occasional Soirées Françaises - about four a year. This is an opportunity to speak French in an informal atmosphere with refreshments to lubricate the thought process. WEALDEN COUNCIL: Wealden Volunteer Awards Scheme (open until April 30). The council wants to support, recognise and encourage volunteering in the Wealden area, which is so important to the health and well-being of the community as well as the individual volunteer. WOODHILL PATIENTS GROUP: After a hiatus of several months to allow the new Woodhill practice to bed-in it’s felt it is now a good time to convene the next WPG meeting. This is scheduled for Wednesday, at 8pm to 9.30pm. They hope to get an update from the surgery on the progress they have made in the past few months and clarification on any issues of concern to patients, eg appointment booking system. They encourage everyone to attend this meeting if at all possible. The organisation depends on the services offered by GPs and the NHS in general and your experiences, opinions and concerns should be heard in order to ensure everyone receives the best possible care. If you are unable to attend and have any questions or points you would like raised at this meeting please contact the Chair or Secretary via the email addresses below and they will do their best to air them at the meeting. The WPG Committee has arranged a meeting between the chair, deputy chair and the practice manager and one of the practice doctors at the end of February. It is important that the WPG and the practice forge a positive and constructive relationship for the good of all patients and the wider community. Clinical Commissioning Groups are consulting with the public on six potential options for providing NHS maternity, in-patient paediatric and emergency gynaecology services at Crowborough, Eastbourne and Hastings. The consultation closes on April 8. CCGs will make a final decision in summer 2014. MONTHLY WALK: Sunday March 30; the clocks will have gone forwards so, despite losing an hour’s sleep, Deborah hopes that as many of you as possible can turn over a new leaf, welcome the start of spring and join her for a pleasant stroll along some of the parish’s footpaths and bridleways. For the past few months they have been aiming to choose walks that are as dry as possible so although it may be a bit muddy they will, as far as they can, avoid any really difficult routes. CAR BOOT SALE: Fundraiser for CAFOD. It’s time to sort out and sell off all of your unwanted items and make yourself some cash, or come and find yourself a real bargain. This event will take place in Mayfield on Saturday, April 12 from 10am to 1pm on the main car park of St Leonards-Mayfield School. Note that the entry is via the Sports Grounds visitor entrance, Tunbridge Wells Road (down from the Fire Station).

FAMILY FILM CLUB: Tomorrow, Saturday, the club will be showing Charlie Chaplin’s The Kid, at Mayfield Memorial Hall from 3.30pm, doors open 3pm. The Kid is a 1921 American silent comedy drama written by, produced by, directed by and starring Charlie Chaplin, featuring Jackie Coogan as his adopted son and sidekick. The film is only an hour long. There will be crafts, activities and a chance to play for the children after the show. Refreshments available, pay on the door: Adults £3, children £5.

SPRING SHOW: Five Ashes Horticultural Society Spring Show will be held at Five Ashes Village Hall on Saturday, March 29 from 2pm. Schedules, with entry forms, for both shows, will be available from The Pink Cabbage Produce Co, Five Ashes Village Hall, The Five Ashes Inn and direct from Graham Playfoot on 01825 830511. Last year was the coldest March for 50 years and this year, so far, we’ve had the wettest winter for 250 years. Will the problems ever end?

LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY: Friday, March 28 in the Scout and Guide Hall at 7.30pm for 8pm. The History of Ightham Mote. The society welcomes Heather Woodward back to describe one of the most enchanting small manor houses in South East England. The house was built in the 1320s and all subsequent owners have been very sensitive to its mediaeval origins. This means that the house has features from a very wide range of architectural periods. Heather’s slides will show almost all the rooms of the house and some of the gardens, and the talk looks at the lives of some of the people who have lived and worked at Ightham Mote over the centuries. By profession, Heather was a teacher of French, senior teacher in a grammar school and the head of sixth form, all these gave her ample practice in public speaking. When she retired, she realised that she needed to keep her brain fully active and this was when she was recruited for the National Trust.

WWl IN BELGIUM: I’m off to Belgium tomorrow, visiting various WWl sites, including St Yves Cross, where the Christmas truce football match was played between the British and the Germans, and the new Bastogne War Museum in Luxembourg, which opens the day after we see it. But I’ll be back in time for next week’s Parish Pump.

LEWES RACECOURSE: I used to love the Lewes horsy world when I was in my teens. I’ve recently made contact with some old friends and I was pleased to discover that there’s a Lewes Racecourse Society. I know it’s early, but you might like to get involved with the planned event, so I’m including details here. Money raised will go to Victoria Hospital. Contact Barry Foulkes; Lewes Racecourse Carnival Day, a grand parade will make its way through the town on Sunday, September 14, to mark the 50th anniversary of the closure of Lewes Racecourse. We are in great need for more people to help with this event as we only have a small committee, We will need volunteers to Marshall the roads, people who would be willing to set up stalls and costume people to join in the parade. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY: Uckfield and District Horticultural March Meeting was a talk and slide show by Clive Gravett entitled Lawnmowers. Clive is one of the leading collectors of historical lawnmowers in the country and brought along eight for us to see. His talk was interesting and amusing with visual and sound effects. Before lawnmowers, scythes were used to cut grass, but the lawnmower was invented to cut the lawn. Lawn comes from the French word laune which meant a glade in a wood. A type of lawn was mentioned by Elbertus Magnus , a Dominican monk, in 1260 when he said an area should be cleared of weeds, have boiling water poured over it and then laid with turves. This was probably moss or herbs rather than grass. Sheep of course were the very first mowers but in 1830’s James Ferrebee had set up the Phoenix foundry and Edwin Budding patented the design of a gear driven mowing machine. The idea came to Edwin Budding whilst working at Ferribee’s wool textile factory. A machine was used to cut off the bobbles on the rolls of weaved wool cloth. He used this principle to design a gear driven mowing machine which was very heavy and needed a man to push and a boy to pull at the front. This was at the same period as Stevenson’s Rocket was produced. There were many different models produced. 1842 a pony and horse drawn version with special leather protectors for the hooves of the animals to reduce their hoof prints on the lawn. 1859 the gear system was refined to a chain which made it less noisy. A 10” mower cost £3.10s.0. and a donkey pulled 26 inch model £13.0.0, and a 48 inch model £30. 1869 a much lighter version was made with the gear on one of the side wheels as the heavy roller drove the system previously. There were steam powered version by 1893 but you still had to walk behind. In 1902 mass production of petrol engine ones were introduced by Ransomes. Alco motor mowers in 1920 cost £75, which was redesigned in 1922 with the exhaust at the back. Previously they had been at the top and very exposed. No health and safety then. 1926 The Electra, an electric lawnmower was produced. 1933 the first rotary cutting blade and in 1960 the first Flymo which was a spin off from the hovercraft. In 1995 we had the first robot mower. The next monthly Meeting of the Uckfield and District Horticultural Society will be held on Monday April 14 at 7.30p.m. at The Ashdown Room, Uckfield Civic Centre. HOUSEBOUND and Friendship Club. On Wednesday March 12 Uckfield Housebound & Friendship Club celebrated its 50 anniversary with a lunch at Crockstead Farm Hotel, when a delicious meal of shepherds pie followed by apple crumble and tea or coffee was enjoyed by 34 members, helpers and guests. The guests invited were Wendy Compton, who ran the Club for 18 years in the 1980’s, and Rose Willcox who ran the club for 14 years until the end of 2012. The Housebound Club which was formed in March 1964 by the British Red Cross and then met twice a month at the Red Cross Hall in Selby Road, has just celebrated its 50th Birthday. The meetings comprised of crafts, games, exercises and lunch. In 2007 the Housebound Club became independent from the British Red Cross with its meetings held at the Luxford Centre and has always had a loyal and dedicated team of volunteers that has made it such a success over so many years. At the beginning of 2013 the format of the meetings, which continue to be held twice a month on the second and forth Wednesdays was changed. Members are taken out to lunch on second Wednesdays out to tea on the forth Wednesdays. With the current team of volunteers led by members of the Uckfield and District Lions Club, the club is going from strength to strength. In 2013 it was decided to change the clubs name and it is now called Uckfield Housebound and Friendship Club. It is proving so popular that it now has a membership of 31 with a waiting list. The limitation on membership is due to transport. Uckfield Lions minibus is used for wheelchair users and people with walking difficulties and another mini bus for the more able members, both are full.


SWINGING: This week, Swinging Affair will entertain us at the Star at lunchtime on Sunday. The following week, on Mothering Sunday, which this year falls on March 30, there is a special menu for mums being spoiled by their children and/or husbands. The special menu is out now and bookings are coming in fast, so don’t delay if you want to be sure of a table (ring 01435 812495).

RESPONDERS’ QUIZ: On Monday March 31 the monthly pub quiz will be held at the Star in aid of the First Responders. They are the unpaid

volunteers who get formal training in first aid and cardio-pulmonary resus from the Ambulance Service and are then on duty ready to be called on to reach an emergency before the ambulance gets there. Up to one in ten emergency 999 medical calls are for cardiac arrest, and in

the UK each year 10,000 men and women have a heart attack. First Responders may help to save your life, and we need more in the Heathfield and Waldron area. Any money we raise will go towards training and equipping more Responders, so make up a team and come along to this quiz. It’s £10 a head, which includes your one-course supper and there will also be a raffle to boost the profits. Ring 01435 812495 to book your team in (up to six people).

THE SHOP: You may have spotted that there is a notice of planning permission application outside the Stores at Waldron. The application

is for a change of use to holiday accommodation. But don’t stop using the shop. It will take some time for the due process to go through and if permission is given it will be a while before work can be started.

For the time being the shop will continue as it is, including its regular events (French, Book Club and Bridge) which will carry on.

SERVICES: The third Sunday of Lent will be celebrated with Holy Communion at All Saints’ at 8am, Sung Eucharist at St Bartholomew’s at 9.30am, Morning Prayer at the new time of 9.45am at All Saints’, Family Holy Communion at All Saints’ at 11.15am and the day will end with Evening Prayer with hymns at 4.30pm at All Saints’. We will be welcoming back the Reverend Jane Sherwin to Waldron this week and she will be taking the services at 9.30am at St Bart’s and Family Holy Communion at All Saints’ at 11.15am.

MOTHERING SUNDAY: Next week is Mothering Sunday on March 30 and there will be Parish Holy Communion at 10.30am at All Saints’ followed by tea and home-made biscuits, how very appropriate.

SPRING SUN: In early March last year we were doing battle with heavy snow. This year we shook off our umbrellas, hung up our waterproofs and basked in warm sunshine. Before the next cloudburst arrives, I’d like to say how gorgeous Waldron is looking in the sun with banks of daffodils on every possible spot, and primroses and even violets in profusion. Our weather may be mad and unpredictable, but sometimes it produces some fabulous surprises.

HISTORY WALK: Our next walk is tomorrow, Saturday, meeting at Herstmonceux Church at 2pm for a walk of about three miles. There are no stiles but after the winter there may still be some mud. Having said that, it is remarkable how quickly the ground is drying up.

AUCTION OF PROMISES: This is tomorrow, Saturday, at the Dunn Village Hall. Doors open at 6.45pm and the auction commences at 7.15pm. There will be a licensed bar and light refreshments. The proceeds of the evening will be shared jointly between Children of Gambia Services (COGS) and The Dunn Village Hall Fund. Many fantastic lots including tickets to a range of attractions, hamper of food, selection of wine, MOT, fantastic homemade cakes and many more interesting and unusual lots. JUMBLE SALE in support of the Ebeneezer Children’s home in Chennai, South India. The jumble sale will be at Punnett’s Town Village Hall next Saturday, March 29, to raise funds for a new jeep for the home. This provides essential transport for the staff and children. EVENTS WEEK: Warbleton, Bodle Street and Dallington churches are holding an Events Week from Thursday April 10 to Maundy Thursday, April 17. We have a wide range of events: a quiz night, a rugby club supper, a film night, 10 pin bowling, an Any Questions style evening, an astronomy evening, a discussion evening and a Passover supper. We will be welcoming a team of students and their tutor from Oak Hill Theological College, London, who will be working with us during the week. All are very welcome to these events, whether convinced atheist, committed Christian or somewhere in between. Leaflets giving full details of the week should be dropping through all the letterboxes in the parishes in the next week or two.

PLANT POTS: Coffee and Company is open for coffee and chat each Thursday (10am to noon). It holds occasional special events. One is the plant sale on May 15. Julia Padbury is organising this and would appreciate offers of spare plants, surplus seedlings etc. She is also looking for large plastic flower pots (say 8”/20cm or bigger).
