TAKE A STROLL: The Footpath Society will be off again tomorrow (Saturday). Then on Wednesday the meeting point will be Crowlink car park NT off the A259 before East Dean. Then there will be a seven and a half mile trek through Crowlink village, Bramble Bottom, Ringwood Bottom, East Dean and back to Crowlink. Find out more on 01323 896831.

JUMBLERS PREPARE: The next sale will be in the village hall at 2pm on Saturday, September 5 and will be in aid of the New Pavilion Fund.

CROSSING GATES: At the time of writing no decision has been issued as to whether or not Network Rail’s listed building application to replace the gates has been approved or not. But at the beginning of the week NR had established a depot in advance of the impending works. Is this arrogance or a total disregard for the law and general regulations? The attitude appears to be that Network Rail intends to complete the work, having already spent thousands on preparations, come what may and whatever anyone else says.

PARKING: The latest complaint about inconsiderate parking of vehicles revolves around the apparent number that are dotted around Plumpton Green and left for quite long periods of time, often to the annoyance and inconvenience of residents. Allegations are also being made that these vehicles are being left around for commercial reasons. Many complaints are directed towards the Parish Council but it is important to realise that the council has absolutely no jurisdiction or direct influence in such matters. Those responsible are the police and the highways authority (ESCC). However, it is important to bear in mind, before seeking any form of redress, that if a vehicle is taxed, insured and parked in a location that does not prohibit or restrict parking, then no offence is being committed unless the vehicle is causing an obstruction or is otherwise causing a danger. The fact that some people have no respect for others is not against the law.

PRIZEWINNERS: Recently I bemoaned the fact that there seems to be little enthusiasm for community events and cited the low number of entries in the Horticultural Society’s Summer Show. I pointed out that there were only single entries in some classes, but I want to make it quite clear that a single entry does not automatically qualify the entrant for a ‘first’ because the judges will not award a first prize to a substandard entry by default. Let me also add that reminder does not emanate from a complaint by a Horticultural Society member, but I spotted the inference that might be drawn from my comment, quite unjustly for the competitors. Despite what folk may say, I am not all bad.
