FOOTNOTES: A week of medical alarms and excursions. I normally present myself to my doctor about once a year with some ailment or another, which in his usually competent way he solves for me, and I am sent on my way much relieved. Living with only a somewhat cynical and pessimistic cat as a companion, I can imagine all sorts of maladies afflicting me, so this is always a great relief. Last week I set off for my annual flu jab. Arriving outside the surgery I was confronted with a three deep queue, stretching back some hundred yards. However, I thought, I am here now, so I parked up and trotted off to join the back of the queue. This was my mistake. As I turned to take my place an agonising pain shot through my leg and I had no choice but to limp back to the car and go home. Later I found out they had run out of the flu gunge, so I would have been unlucky anyway. A visit to the doctor a week and a half later, resulted in an ultra sound. It all ended happily. There was nothing seriously wrong, just a badly pulled muscle. I also got my flu jab at the same time. I was due to have a blood test, but none of my veins would co-operate. Mark you, asking me for blood at eight thirty in the morning is a bit of a stretch. This is all the result of getting old. As a young man I only saw a doctor for insurance purposes or to get a jab against yellow fever, etc. Filming in India over about a year, I shared a house with an English doctor, and saw the job from the other side as it were, so although I tease them when I do see them, I do have a great deal of sympathy for what they do. I discussed all this with Chaplin over tea, for me, milk for him and biscuits. As usual I got no sympathy. Have a good week and go safely where ever your journeys take you.
