CLUBS AND SOCIETIES: I wonder how many clubs and societies there are in the Uckfield area? There must be hundreds. The sad thing is that most people don’t know anything about them. Do use your Parish Pump to inform everyone about them. Remember that it’s a free service. Please pass this message on to anyone who you know is involved in anything local at all.
DECORATIVE AND FINE ARTS: Uckfield and Lewes Decorative and Fine Arts Society is back after their summer break. Anyone is welcome to come along to our meetings when we have a first class speaker in their field of expertise in some aspect of the decorative and fine arts. A lot of people say ‘I don’t know anything about decorative or fine arts’ but you don’t have to know anything. Each talk stands alone and we have very diverse subjects from the life of artists showing their paintings, what influenced them and how they change style during their life time. What hidden messages there are in paintings, what have you have missed? Jewellery, how styles have changed. Architecture, this year how Scandinavia became one of the leading countries for progressive design in the 20th Century. Art in religion over the centuries. You hear of Art Deco, Renaissance, their mysteries will be revealed.
Our first meeting is on Wednesday at the Weald Hall, Uckfield Civic Centre at 2.30pm when Clyde Binfield will talk about Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Glasgow. An architect, designer, water colourist and artist. A designer in the postimpressionist period and the main representative of Art Nouveau in the UK. We have 10 lectures throughout the year costing £40 pa or if you wish to have a taster, £7 for a visitor, which is returned if you become a member at the meeting. We make our members welcome, with tea and coffee before the lecture enabling them to chat with others. We also have a new members’ lunch in November, to which new members may wish to come, so that they can get to know the team that
run our society and other new members. Lunch is nothing grand, just sandwiches, which we provide, but it is more about getting to know members and them the team. How we try to provide lectures on subjects members have suggested, how we can improve the whole experience by listening to the impression new members have of the society. I look forward to seeing you. I suggest you arrive at least 10 to 15 minutes early, so that you have time to look at the notices of trips and other events. The meeting will start promptly at 2.30pm. (Dorothy Sparks, Chairman).
HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY: Uckfield and District Horticultural Society next monthly meeting will be held on Thursday at 7.30pm at The Luxford Centre, Library Way (please note change of day and venue) when there will be a talk and slide show by Alison Marsden entitled More Impact, Less Effort. All Welcome. Non Members £3.
