ADVENT: This Sunday is the first in Advent, the beginning of the church year. The word Advent comes from the Latin adventus (arrival) and refers to the four weeks before Christmas, beginning with St Andrew’s Day (November 30) or the nearest Sunday to it. It commemorates the coming of Christ. See below for services.
TELEPHONE BOX: We have not just one but two volunteers to give a little TLC to keep our village telephone box in order. Fantastic result. Thanks to Martin Rylands (lead volunteer) and Vicki Redmond (assistant) who are going to keep an eye on it. Many thanks to Roy Wilkinson whose project this has been for several years and to Richard Caswell who, with Roy, has carried out running repairs particularly to the door which is now looking bright and pristine.
WHAT’S ON: At the Star this Sunday, a group calling itself Matching Ties and Handkerchieves will be playing at lunch time. On Monday it’s Quiz Night, starting at 7.30pm as usual for teams of up to six people. On Sunday December 6, String Theory will be playing. The pub will be offering its Christmas Menu from Tuesday until Wednesday December 23, which will include a three course seasonal menu for £25 per head.
SERVICES: This Sunday is Advent and both morning services will be at St Bartholomew’s, at 8am for Holy Communion and 10am for Parish Eucharist. At the 10am service, two extra things will be happening: first, it will be Toy Sunday when we are asked to bring toys, gifts etc plus wrapping paper for Family Support Work (FSW, for local families in need). Secondly, the parish Knitting Group will be bringing their output to be blessed during the service before the items go in different directions for Christmas and the New Year. Some will appear on the FSW stall at the Waldron Christmas Market on December 12, and the rest will be sent to Loving Hands, the charity which distributes knitted items to children who have so few treasures like these. The Advent Carol Service will be at 6pm at All Saints.’ Next Sunday, December 6, there will be a second Toy Sunday for regulars at All Saints’ to bring gifts for FSW.
