Villages across Midhurst and Petworth could have joint speed limit orders

At a meeting of West Sussex County Council’s county local committee Stedham parish councillor John Wheelhouse asked highways officers to take up a plea from Iping residents for a speed reduction from 40mph to 30mph. He said they were concerned despite narrow roads motorists still drove too fast.

The Iping road is now due to be monitored to gather date on volume and speed.

Mr Wheelhouse was told if the data suggested action was needed, the traffic regulation order (TRO) process would begin.

But a representative from Woolbeing with Redford told chairman Michael Brown: “We have the same concerns about speed and perhaps this should be taken forward as an initiative for all the villages.”

He said he believed increasing speeds in villages was caused by the opening of the Hindhead tunnel.

Cllr Brown said it was possible to have more than one item on a TRO.

If parish councils showed support for speed reductions in their villages the matter could be taken forward.
