The shortage was due to burst pipes caused by the extreme weather in recent days.

Thames Water, South East Water, Southern Water and Affinity Water issued a joint statement on Sunday urging 13 million people who still have access to water to use it sparingly.

Citing ‘significant’ numbers of people being left without water, the companies have advised people take short showers not baths and only use dishwashers containing full loads. There has been an increase in leaks across networks as the Beast from the East and Storm Emma recede.

The joint statement said: “We are putting as much extra water as we can into our local networks and fixing leaks and bursts as quickly as possible. We sincerely apologise to all those who are currently without water or experiencing low pressure.”

A lorry arrived in Rotherfield and South East Water workers unloaded huge supplies of bottled water for distribution among residents.
