VIOLENT YOUTHS CAUSE MISERY

LEWES Police have been asked to provide extra patrols along the disused railway line that runs from Malling recreation ground to the river because of the vandalism and violence caused by youths.

The problems have increased during the long, light evenings. The tent of two youths who were camping there for the night was set on fire and in a more serious recent incident a woman walking her dog was hit on the head by a large stone dropped from one of the bridges over the cutting.

Vandals even targeted police headquarters, setting fire to the copse behind the HQ. The latest craze appears to be walking over parked cars on the estate. Eight cars have been damaged in this way, and two people were arrested.
