In the fields around the barn and the newly shingle roofed Orchard House, workmen and crafts men showed their techniques and wares and many encouraged the visitors to join in .

One of those who did not invite visitors to take part was chainsaw carving Rob Beckinsale, who completed a walnut owl to go along side his other birds, coils and carvings.

Visitors made nesting boxes, plant labels, twine out of nettles without being stung and three legged stools as well as willow weaving of flying fish.

There were crayons being made from twigs; shingles for roofs, charcoal, as well as pole lathing to watch; old tools to buy and the Trust’s Sussex and Belted Galloway cattle and Herdwick sheep to admire.

Visitors could also enjoy handling the bats from the Surrey Bat Group, along with reptiles and amphibians to touch and hawks to see.

Later, burgers from the Trust’s cattle as well as other food were served to keep the visitors sustained while they admired how many items can be made from
nature’s produce.
