Visits ban partially lifted as Irvine Unit bug eases

A BAN on visitors to the Irvine Unit at Bexhill Hospital where both staff and patients have been laid low by a bug has been partially lifted.

All visits had to be halted for 10 days because of an outbreak of diarrhoea and vomiting sickness.

A spokesman for Hastings and Rother Primary Care Trust told the Observer on Monday morning: "We have taken the decision to temporarily close the Irvine Unit to visitors as an important infection control precaution.

"This is one of a range of measures in place to prevent the spread of a diarrhoea and vomiting bug that has been affecting a number of patients and staff over the past 10 days.

"This stop on visitors is under constant review and we have contacted as many relatives as possible to explain the situation, and we appreciate the co-operation of patients' relatives and carers at this time."

By Tuesday afternoon the restriction on visiting was lifted with the exception of visits to two patients who were still affected by the virus.
