Vital cancer surgery forcibly moved from Worthing to Brighton

A pioneering multi-disciplinary team at Worthing Hospital at the forefront of non-invasive surgery for osophageal and gastric cancers has been blocked from continuing becase the Sussex Cancer Network does not recognise it as a designated team.

The network says such specialist surgery must be performed in a centre where the team is based, and that team should serve a population of one million, given the low incidence of these types of cancer.

But patients waiting for treatment at Worthing Hospital claim they have been left in limbo and fear their operations will be delayed until the facility is set up at the Royal Sussex Hospital in Brighton.

Members of a support group of patients, including Fred Plauz of Upper Beeding and Mrs Sue Dixon, are fighting the move.

They believe the treatment at Brighton will be inferior, and say the hopsital has no stars while Worthing has two, and Brighton has the highest rate of MRSA in the country. It is also inaccessible, overcrowded and congested.
