The council was behind the project for three courts on the seafront on a disused plot of shingle on beach next to the bowling green in Royal Parade.

The plan was for a range of beach sports activities offered to all ages and abilities and coaching from Eastbourne Volleyball Club.

The council said at the time it also hoped the town could host tournaments and events throughout the year and attract players and spectators with festivals, competitions and cups.

But a consultation on the proposal led to concerns from residents living nearby over noise.

Officials looked at an alternative site closer to Treasure Island but an issue with a pipe in the area prevented the scheme going ahead and the courts being built.

A report due to go before the council’s decision making cabinet committee next month confirmed the scheme has now been withdrawn and that £6,000 had been spent on exploratory work.

A spokesperson at Eastbourne council said, “The scheme is no longer progressing. Costs are associated with the volleyball designs, permissions and architects fees and for Southern Water to seek permission for build over access rights.”
