Members of Battle Local Action Planning Group (BLAPG) and town councillors started the hands-on project to revamp the walkway between Mount Street car park and the High Street, following residents’ concerns about its appearance.

Bev Marks, chairman of BLAPG, said: “This very important pedestrian route used by locals and many visitors had been a BLAPG concern for many years about how it represented the town, being the first impression of many visitors.

“It had become a rather dingy, dirty, uncared-for alleyway that did the town no credit at all. After extensive enquiries to establish who the landowners were and to then obtain their permission, BLAPG was able to set about this project. Paint was kindly sponsored by Brewers and the ‘elbow grease’ given by BLAPG volunteers, happy in the knowledge their effort would brighten up the twitten.”

More will be needed to totally revamp the area and further works are planned over the next few weeks.

Mr Marks added: “This one contribution will make Battle a little smarter, ready for the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings, when we can expect many hundreds of visitors to be using the twitten. Following our survey undertaken late summer last year we know people’s top priorities are traffic and transport in the Battle area and Battle town centre appearance.

“BLAPG has been working hard on both themes, but we are reliant on many agencies to get action to happen, whereas cleaning and painting the twitten is within our own capability, to improve the town appearance.”
