Volunteers honoured at Royal garden party

Jane Wyatt, 73, of West Parade in Worthing, has ran The Beeches nursing home in Wordsworth Road for the past 30 years, and has volunteered in orphanages and hospitals in Kenya for the past 25 years.

She attended the palace event on May 24 as recognition of her work opening a school in Nairobi for children living in poverty.

She said: “I suppose the best part of it is giving the best care to people. I have got a good reputation for care, and I love the children.

“The only food they get a day is the food they get from my school. We have to give them hampers over the school holidays, otherwise they won’t eat during that time.

“I couldn’t believe it when I got the invitation, and I didn’t know what to do. I went with my daughter Lucy, who has been coming out to Africa with me since she was 11. The Queen was charming, the tea was good, and everyone was lovely and looked after us as proper guests.”

Also attending was David Bettiss, chairman of the Ferring Conservation Group, which has been given the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

He said: “It was a fantastic day, and it was a great honour to walk through the front gates of Buckingham Palace. There was a lovely camaraderie among us and we kept taking photos.”
