Volunteers needed for Arun charities

A CHARITY providing specially-adapted radios for blind and partially-sighted people is seeking more volunteers to demonstrate and install the sets.

The British Wireless for the Blind Fund helps people with sight problems to access the world of audio by providing high quality, easy-to-use radios and audio players which have been designed or modified to meet the needs of the listeners, ranging from simple digital radios to a wireless internet audio player.

For those who meet the criteria the equipment is available on a free loan basis and there is an important role for volunteers who visit people in their homes to install the sets and teach them how to use it.

Training is provided. Each visit takes about 90 minutes and the volunteer is expected to make two to four visits a month, completing the paperwork and following up with a phone call. A full, clean driving licence and access to a vehicle is required. Volunteers should be aged between 25 and 75.

Volunteers are needed to help run information shops for young people in Worthing, Bognor and Chichester. The shops provide a drop-in service for young people aged 13-25 and offer information, advice, guidance and emotional support on a wide range of areas such as employment, training, money, debts, housing, benefits, mental health, sexual health and family and relationships.

The volunteering role would be to meet young people when they enter the shop and engage them, to explore what information, advice and guidance they are looking for and then either assist them with this or refer them on to the relevant person who can best meet their needs. The role would suit anyone who enjoys working with young people and enjoys the complexities and challenges that they bring and wants to help unlock their potential.
