Volunteers thanked for their work

Volunteers at the Aldingbourne Trust have been thanked for their efforts.

The work of the helpers has been recognised by the charity as national volunteers' week celebrates its 25th anniversary this week.

The trust, based at the Aldingbourne Country Centre off the A27 near Fontwell, has 36 volunteers to support its work helping adults with learning disabilities to unlock their potential.

Michelle McKinley Bell, the trust's enterprise and development manager, said: "Without our volunteers, we would not be able to offer such a variety of opportunities and experiences.

"They are unique individuals who are very much appreciated, not only by the people they support, but also the staff, management and trustees of the trust who would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to them."

The committed and motivated volunteers provide valuable support across many departments. They range from horticulture, cafe, art and craft, organics, community gardening and literacy help. A long-service volunteer of 15 years, Maureen Chaplin, helps within the horticulture department at the country centre.

"I truly value my experience at the centre," she said, "as I enjoy supporting adults with learning disabilities, developing the plant nurseries and really enjoy the pleasant, friendly atmosphere the centre provides."

Siobhan Gavin, who has recently started helping in the art and craft

service, commented: "I have been made to feel welcome and relaxed in my first two weeks. Already, I feel a sense of satisfaction and had my eyes opened to volunteering opportunities.

"With a theatre and art background, I am looking forward to sharing my knowledge and experience in a creative way to help others develop their skills."

Volunteers with the Aldingbourne Trust can give as little as an hour a week or as much time as they have available.

Among the benefits they gain are a sense of self-satisfaction and pride as well as learning new skills.
