VOTE 2010: Titnore vote row in Worthing election leaflet

EARLY blows in Worthing's election battle were exchanged this week between the Lib Dems and Conservatives, over the West Durrington development.

The Lib Dems called on the Tories to apologise for a statement in their Gaisford ward In Touch pamphlet, which said "Lib Dems voted against us", in respect of fewer homes for the Titnore Woods area.

"This would appear to refer to the decision by the Worthing planning committee on the West Durrington application," said the Lib Dems.

"The claim that the Liberal Democrats voted for the application is completely and wholly untrue.

"The vote of the planning committee, consisting of both Conservatives and Liberal Democrats, was unanimous in their rejection."

Worthing Council leader Paul Yallop told the Herald yesterday: "The Lib Dems are just trying to confuse the voters. The vote we were referring to was that at the following full council meeting, when the borough's future core strategy was discussed.

"A revision to reduce the number of planned homes, from 875 to 700, in the light of the planning committee decision, was opposed by most Lib Dems at that council meeting."
