VOTE 2010: What does Worthing want from its MP?

WITH a general election called for Thursday, May 6, parliamentary candidates in Worthing, Adur and the South Downs are preparing to battle it out.

The Herald has put together a list of candidates for the Worthing West division, East Worthing and Shoreham, and the Arundel and South Downs division.

The Worthing West division candidates are: Conservative, Peter Bottomley; Labour, Ian Ross; Liberal Democrats, Hazel Thorpe; and UKIP, John Wallace.

Mr Bottomley is the current MP for the area and has held his position since May, 1997.

Mr Ross is 24 years old and this is the first time he is standing in an election.

Mrs Thorpe stood as a parliamentary candidate in the 2005 general election in Brighton Pavilion. She is a Worthing borough councillor.

Mr Wallace will be fighting for the seat for the first time.

The East Worthing and Shoreham division candidates are: Conservative, Tim Loughton; Labour, Emily Benn; Liberal Democrats, James Doyle; English Democrats, Clive Maltby; Green, Susan Board; and UKIP, Michael Glennon.

Mr Loughton is the current MP for the area and has held the position since May, 1997.

Miss Benn was selected as a parliamentary candidate three years ago. The 20-year-old is the granddaughter of well-known former MP Tony Benn.

Mr Doyle, an IT consultant, previously stood for the seat in 2005. He is married with one adopted son.

Mr Maltby, Miss Board and Mr Glennon will all be fighting for the seat for the first time.

The parliamentary candidates for Arundel and South Downs are: Conservative, Nick Herbert; Labour, Tim Lunnon; Liberal Democrats, Derek Deedman; and UKIP, Stuart Bower.

Mr Herbert is the current MP for the area and has held the position since May, 2005.

Mr Lunnon and Mr Bower are both standing for the seat for the first time.

Mr Deedman is a former Adur district councillor and is a current West Sussex county councillor.
