VOTE: Arundel parking plan may result in ‘catastrophe’

TRADERS in Arundel have voiced their views about a “catastrophic” proposed parking scheme for the town.

Members of Arundel Chamber of Commerce have batted away the scheme for a radical shake-up of the town’s current on-street parking facilities, saying it would effectively lock down the shopping precinct.

The plans could see a residents’ parking scheme introduced, as well as more pay-and-display bays in the town.

At a chamber meeting last week, members claimed that the proposals could have an adverse effect on Arundel’s economy, suggesting that businesses would be hardest hit.

James Stewart, owner of the Zimmer Stewart Gallery, in Tarrant Street, and co-chairman of the chamber, warned: “The result would be to lock down the town.

“There would be no road without any parking restriction, including Mill Road, which would be pay-and-display, and the Ford Road area.”

He added: “This will reduce the economic viability of the town, as people tend to go to other towns where such overriding parking restrictions do not exist.”

Members also claimed that the new parking could put off visitors and discourage overnight tourists – hitting many of Arundel’s thriving bed-and-breakfast establishments, hotels and guest houses.

They claimed the parking scheme would provide no real benefits for residents, who would end up paying for parking bays they currently use for free.

“This will affect all businesses at the height of the season, and be catastrophic in the quiet months out of season,” Mr Stewart said.

Details of the review can be seen on the county council’s website. The consultation will end on Friday, October 26. Comments can also be sent to: The Parking Strategy Team, The Grange, Tower Street, Chichester, PO19 1RH.
