VOTE: Do you support the appeal to stop speeding drivers in Littlehampton?

FEARS that children could be hit by speeding drivers in a Littlehampton road have prompted an appeal by worried parents, this week.

Residents in Gratwicke Drive, on the Eden Park estate, have voiced their concerns about the increasing number of speeding motorists driving down the street.

Parents have said that it is only a “matter of time” until tragedy strikes and that reckless drivers often break the speed limit on the road, which is yards away from several play areas in the estate.

Father-of-four Paul White has lived in the road for more than two years and said that the problem has escalated since he arrived.

“It’s becoming a very dangerous situation, particularly with all the children off school on their summer holidays,” said the 54-year-old.

Chairman of the Eden Park Residents’ Association, Angela Honeywood, said she is concerned every time she goes out walking with her three-year-old grand-daughter.

She said the residents’ association had been in contact with site developers, Taylor Wimpey, to see if there was anyway more signs could be introduced, and to urge the company to try and implement temporary speed bumps along Olliver Acre and Gratwicke Drive.

A spokesman for Taylor Wimpey said all roads had been constructed in accordance with West Sussex County Council requirements.

“At present, we are completing remedial work to the roads,” he added. “Once this is completed, a final safety audit will be carried out by highway safety professionals and to the approval of the county council.”

A spokesman for the county council added that the roads had not yet been adopted by the authority and that highway safety issues, for the time being, were in the hands of Taylor Wimpey.
