VOTE: Durrington toilet upgrade

A £10,000 unisex toilet for wheelchair users is being provided at council allotments in Durrington.

A concrete approach ramp will be built for the moss-green toilet, which is designed for unassisted wheelchair users.

The new facility will replace two toilet cubicles at the Humber Avenue site, and it will cater for users of raised allotment beds which the borough council plans to install.

Ian Dunster, chairman of Worthing and District Allotment Holders Association, told the Herald that any blue-badge holder could apply to have one of these allotments.

When asked if there were people wanting to use such allotments, Mr Dunster said: "We don't really know at the moment.

"But I am sure we will get blue-badge holders applying once they are advertised."

Mr Dunster continued that the old toilets were worn out: "The floors are rusted and they are an accident waiting to happen."

He said the Durrington wheelchair-accessible toilet would be a first for the borough.

"It is the best site in town, the whole site is flat. And, of course, anybody other than disabled people will also be able to use the toilet."

Have your say

In this budget-cut climate, should Worthing Council be spending 10,000 on the new toilet facility?
