VOTE: Upgrade nightmare on A27

A Bognor Regis tenant says he has been left distressed and depressed over 'disorganised' improvements being carried out to his home as part of a national scheme.

Peter Clark's home in Hampshire Avenue is having the kitchen and bathroom renovated as part of the Decent Homes Contract, but Mr Clark said the works had been dragging on and on because of bad management by Arun District Council.

Mr Clark, who has lived in the property for 12 years, said: "It has been a nightmare, I was told the work would take three weeks, but so far it has been about eight weeks. It has caused serious upheaval to myself and my family.

"It has caused problems between me and my wife and I have threatened to leave several times, we are all just so depressed by it. I suffer from stress and I am on medication for it, and this situation is not helping. This is all supposed to be about providing people with a decent

place to live, well in this case that is just a joke.

"I have been left with a bath I cannot use, dust everywhere and walls damaged."

A spokesman for Arun District Council said: "All council properties are inspected and assessed as to whether or not the kitchen and the bathroom conform to the criteria for the Decent Homes Standards."

Work to improve the property was started last month by Connaught Partnerships before it went into administration earlier this month.

Mr Clark, who is 6ft 4inches tall, now has to squeeze into a 5ft 3inch bath.

He said: "The bath is just of no use to me. They have put a shower in, but during the winter I don't want to get a shower. I should be able to get a bath in my own home."

Arun's spokesman said: "The council's surveyor discussed with Mr and Mrs Clark the fact the WC would have to be brought into the bathroom and a doorway closed up.

"To facilitate this re-arrangement, a 1,600mm bath had to be fitted.

Mr Clark is tall and has complained the new bath is not long enough

for him.

"Unfortunately we are unable to fit a longer bath within the existing bathroom, but as part of the Decent Homes work, a shower will also be fitted over the bath."
