VOTE: Worthing Council to spend £9,000 to be nice to each other

WORTHING Council is set to spend up to £50,000 on outside consultants to find efficiency savings in its leisure and cultural services.

And the council is also being urged to spend 9,000 on helping members and officers to behave ethically towards each other and the public.

A meeting of the borough council cabinet today (Thursday, December 3) is being recommended to release the consultancy cash after being told of the "difficulty" in identifying efficiency savings in the leisure services.

An officers' report says this year the department had offered up savings of 20,000, with potential additional savings of up to 25,000 from the sharing of the foreshore service with Adur Council and Lancing Parish Council.

Budget savings

This was only one per cent of the council's overall savings total, despite these services being responsible for net expenditure of more than 5.6million (29 per cent of the council's budget).

Worthing Council's standards committee wants the full council to allocate 9,000 for an "Ethical Governance Light Touch Health Check and Benchmark" and two days of developmental workshops to ensure that "weaknesses identified in the health check" are addressed.

It states: "The way that councillors and officers conduct themselves and act out those values as part of their day-to-day functions in public life is visible in their behaviour; and how this is perceived by colleagues, members of the public and the media all impact on the council and councillors' ability to represent local government and the communities they serve."
