VOTERS REJECT HALL PROJECT

Voters in Newick have rejected plans for a new village hall.

A poll took place on Thursday last week to establish whether Newick residents support the provision of a new village hall on the site adjacent to the Old Telephone Exchange.

The results showed 206 people in favour of the proposal and 313 against.

The question was therefore lost.

Voters were also asked whether they would support the Parish Council making a contribution towards the cost, in the form of grant that would go to the Village Hall Management Committee. A contribution of 50,000 borrowed over 25 years would mean a Council Tax increase for Newick residents of 3.13 per household a year on a Band D - this would amount to 31 pence per month. 242 voters answered yes to this question, whilst 236 answered no.

The question was therefore carried.

The percentage turnout was 27.5%.

The poll was originally requested at a Newick Parish Meeting on 15 June 2006 and Newick Parish Council will be considering the results of the poll in due course.
