Wakehurst set for most popular day of the year

Kew’s Ardingly garden is preparing for its busiest day of the year.

With many gardens and outdoor destinations closed over Christmas, Wakehurst Place traditionally sees a peak in visitor numbers on Boxing Day.

The 500-acre estate is situated high in the Sussex High Weald and affords winter views as well as flowers, berries, barks and stem effects.

Spokesman Trevor Butler said: “We run our usual twice-daily guided tours on 26 December as on every other day, subject to the availability of our trained guides.

“Depending on the weather, Boxing Day can be busier than other bank holidays, with entire families coming out to take in the air and admire our wonderful winter vistas.”

The national collection of skimmia can be seen in all its glory at this time of the year along with colour and interest across the gardens, no more so than in the specially-planted Winter Garden beds, behind the Elizabethan mansion.

Britain’s tallest living Christmas tree, a huge Giant Redwood, is lit with 1,800 lamps each afternoon from 3.30pm until Twelfth Night.
