Katie said: "We wanted to have a gap year after we left university but we couldn't afford it. We also wanted to be independent and more flexible than we would be on the tourist trail.

"You can't really explore Africa in any other way than by a 4x4 and see the things that other people don't see."

Katie, from Brighton, has been working in an office job to raise enough money for the trip. Alex has run an internet bookstore.

They are setting off from his home in The Street and travelling through Europe and the Middle East. Their eventual destination is Cape Town.

Along the way, they expect to experience a host of cultures, customs and terrains. "People tend to think of Africa just as one continent but there are a host of differences among its peoples and countries," she explained.

The Red Cross carried out a lot of work in the region. Katie added: "The charity is really prominent there and makes a real difference to the lives of many of its people. That's we decided to back it."

The couple raised some 300 before they set off through raffles and donations from friends and family. They have set up an internet page '“ www.justgiving.com/fourwheelsaround '“ for further donations.
