Walberton school scores full marks for top-class education

Top-class education is provided at Walberton's school.

The report by lead inspector Michael Barron and his two colleagues was so good Ms Shilliday and the governors held a celebration party for the pupils.

Ms Shilliday said: "We have a great team here and we have high expectations for our children.

"The 'outstanding' judgment is the culmination of many years of hard work by a great many people, children and adults.

"We will take a few moments to celebrate and enjoy the feeling. But then we will just keep on working. There are still some things we want to develop further."

Chairman of governors Diana Levantine said: "We know our school is outstanding and this confirms our belief in the headteacher, teaching staff and everyone who works in the school.

"The report said the children are happy, well behaved and attain a very high standard of education. What more could we, or any parent, ask for?"

Mr Barron issued his favourable report last week, a month after his day-long visit to its premises on The Street.

He said the 203 four- to 11-year-olds received an excellent education which provided effective preparation for secondary school.

"Achievement is outstanding and pupils in Year 6 are on course to exceed the very challenging targets set for them in the 2009 national tests.

"Underpinning this excellent progress is high-quality teaching linked to a curriculum which meets the needs of all pupils very effectively.

"However, the school is not complacent and constantly analyses its performance to ensure any gaps in learning are quickly identified and corrected," he said.

He also used the word 'outstanding' to describe the school's early-years foundation stage work, its quality of provision, its leadership and management, pupils' personal development and well-being and achievement and standards, among other categories of work.

His only recommendation for improvement is to visit a variety of places of worship so the children can learn more about different religions.
