WORLD DAY OF PRAYER: This annual event is led by a different national group of women each year and is a remarkable circle of prayer, which goes literally round the world, a bit like a Mexican Wave, only in words. This year’s event (Friday March 3) is led by the Christian women of the Phillippines who have written the service on the theme of Am I Being Unfair To You? which has been translated into 1,000 different languages and dialects to be used throughout the world. It begins at sunrise on Friday on the island of Samoa and finishes at sunset off the coast of American Samoa. Our local service will be at the Union Church in Heathfield High Street at 10.30am.

ASH TREE: A lot of effort has gone into preserving the huge ash tree in the churchyard near the stile over the past few years, but sadly it has now succumbed to ash die-back disease. Advice has been sought from a tree surgeon who has said it must be taken down to ensure no damage to the church building or to passers-by. The work will probably be done this month or early in March.

FOUR IN A BAR: This recently-formed quartet has a name which recognises that they do as much drinking as singing (they tell me). The team has volunteered to perform a programme for us at All Saints’ on March 11 at 7pm in aid of the Friends of Waldron Churches. Don’t miss it, they promise a miscellany of close harmony numbers, from Barbershop to Sea Shanties, via Spirituals, Irish Ballads and The Beatles. What’s more (it gets better and better) they’re arranging their programme to finish in time for us all to cross the road to the pub in time to order dinner to complete a thoroughly cheerful evening. Raise a glass to them. Tickets are a steal at £5 and are available from Judith Clark (01435 812558).

COFFEE MORNINGS: The first of a new series of coffee mornings in aid of church funds will take place on Saturday March 4 at 10am at Bryckden Place, Possingworth Lane at the kind invitation of Rosemary Mays Smith. If there’s anyone who would like to help, making cakes, serving coffee, selling home-made bakes, or donating raffle prizes, please contact Rosemary Kay on 01435 812959. Next month’s coffee morning will be on Saturday April 8 at Burnt Oak House, Burnt Oak at the invitation of Tim and Gail Williams.

SERVICES: This weekend’s services (on Sunday) are both at St Bartholomew’s at 8am for Holy Communion and at 10am for Parish Eucharist followed by refreshments.

ASH WEDNESDAY: This year falls on March 1 and will be celebrated with Eucharist at 8am at St Bartholomew’s Cross in Hand. There will be a series of Lenten Reflections during Lent at Culverwood, Little London Road, based on the prayer by St Teresa of Avila ‘No body in the world but yours.’ It will begin on March 1 at 7pm with No body but yours, and the meetings which follow will be on March 8, No hands but yours; March 15, No feet but yours; March 22, Your eyes of compassion; March 29, Let nothing disturb you, and April 5, All things pass, God never changes. If you would like to come to any (or all) of the reflections, please let George (865376) or Paul (868814) know.
