SPRING SIGNS?: After last weekend's freezing temperatures and even the occasional sleet showers, I hardly dare mutter the word spring but I've actually got a few snowdrops out, so I feel justified in welcoming my favourite season in Waldron. What's more, our panto performances in January were just the remedy to get us through the glooms of that doom-laden month, so we can all pin on a grin and welcome February.

VALENTINE’S DAY: It being many years since I last received a Valentine card, I was struggling to think of something to say about the approach of the Day. What’s it got to do with romance and cards adorned with pink hearts? And what did a St Valentine do to associate him with ‘lurv’, especially when a quick search on line reveals that the two saints of that name seemed to have been murdered in particularly unpleasant ways? It seems it’s all accidental and connected to an ancient custom associated with birds mating at this time of the year. You choose a Valentine and give her a present to let her know that you’d like to set up home with her (not necessarily in a tree). Weird but sweet. Anyway, to help you create an appropriate atmosphere, the pub is offering romantic guys a special menu for The Day. Ring 01435 812495 to book your table or ask a member of staff for a look at the menu.

SERVICES: This weekend’s services (on Sunday) are both at All Saints’ at 8am for Holy Communion and at 10am for Parish Eucharist followed by refreshments. The preacher will be George Pitcher.
