STEAM UP: This Sunday will be the annual visit of the Sussex Steam Engines outside the Star at lunch time with the usual barbecue scenting the air and the clanks and toots which go with this lovely event. Please watch out for the steam engines and be aware that they don't move very fast, so if you want to get somewhere quickly, avoid the centre of the village from mid-morning until mid-afternoon.

WALKING FESTIVAL: Wealden District Council and the Borough of Eastbourne’s Walking Festival starts tomorrow, Saturday, and runs through until Sunday October 2. Over 60 walks are on offer, exploring the Wealden landscape, parts of Eastbourne, the South Downs and the surrounding area. Check the website www.sussexwalkingfestival.org.uk from which you can book your walk or ring 01892 602757 from 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday. There are printed leaflets available at the Star or the Village coffee shop. Most walks are free.

STARLIGHT STROLL: Last Saturday evening half a dozen local supporters and friends from the village took part in a sponsored walk along the front at Eastbourne in aid of St Wilfrid’s Hospice. Joining the party at the Redoubt, we found ourselves amongst a cheerful crowd of several hundred people all carrying lanterns to place at the Holy Well, halfway through the walk. Many were walking in memory of friends or relatives and the collected lanterns flickering in the dark were an impressive sight. Warmest thanks to all those friends who sponsored me. I will be collecting your donations in the next week to send off to St Wilfrid’s and will let you know what the total collected comes to.
