Waldron

CELEBRATIONS: The pub on Monday this week was rather subdued as the staff recuperated from an amazingly busy and exhausting weekend and various personnel in the village tottered up late too. Starting on Friday last there were two weddings, (Friday and Saturday), a champagne reception, a full wedding reception, a 50th birthday party, a baptism and finally the September Sundowner organised by the Friends of Waldron Churches for the whole village. The latter included cheese and wine, lots of chat as everyone caught up with neighbours and friends after the summer holidays, a splendid raffle, a fashion show, a very clever magician and music. Very grateful thanks to Laura for welcoming us to her beautiful garden, James for bringing along the range of delicious cheeses and wines for tasting, the musicians for filling our ears with lovely sounds, the beautiful girls who paraded the fashions with such panache, the generous folk who provided the raffle prizes, and congratulations to Mobbs, Angela and Ian who did so much to make it all work. (I'm sure I have left some people out but forgive me, it's the after effects of a rather good evening). So that was the reason for a very quiet Monday in Waldron this week, and I'm sure we'll all recover in time for next weekend.

ELECTORAL REGISTER: You should have received a form to complete so that you are on the electoral register and will be able to vote in any national and local elections. It’s easy to fill in either on line or by phone or by post, but don’t leave it behind the clock.

PARISH TREASURER: Our present parish treasurer is standing down after serving for what seems like a very long time (ten years?). It promises to be an exciting time as we have all kinds of plans for the reordering of our two churches and it’s vitally important for our funds to be well-managed. If you think you might be able to help please speak to our Rector George Pitcher.

THE CWGC: I noticed a large white van standing by the church wall last week and recognised the initials of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission on the side of the van. Took a cuppa to the two men who were taking a break from their work and discovered that they were here to clean the graves of four of our village men who are buried here having been killed in or just after the First World War. Kevin Barnes told me that they keep the graves to exactly the same standard as the Commission does those thousands of graves in the battlefields of France and Belgium. The particular team who visit Waldron and others in our area have no less than 1300 graves to care for on a regular rota. One hundred years on and the duty is still done. I found it very impressive and moving.

WALKING FESTIVAL: Wealden District Council and the Borough of Eastbourne are again organising a Walking Festival between Saturday September 24 and Sunday October 2. Over 60 walks are on offer, exploring the Wealden landscape, parts of Eastbourne, the South Downs and the surrounding area. Check the website www.sussexwalkingfestival.org.uk from which you can book your walk or ring 01892 602757 from 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday. There are printed leaflets available at the Star or the village coffee shop. Most walks are free.

STEAM ENGINE RALLY: A date for your diary on the last Sunday of September when the annual Steam Engine rally takes place outside the Star. It’s a feast of fun and steam and lovingly cared-for old vehicles. Not to be missed and usually a fine day as the autumn colours paint the countryside brilliant oranges and bronzes.

SERVICES: This Sunday both morning services will be held at St Bartholomew’s with Holy Communion at 8am and Parish Eucharist at 10am. Evening prayer will be at All Saints’ at 6pm.
