QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY: Also this weekend, The Friends of Waldron Churches are organising a Right Royal Ramble as another way of celebrating the Queen’s Birthday. It will be on Sunday and will go from St Bartholomew’s at Cross in Hand to All Saints’ in Waldron, beginning at 2pm. If you’d like to prepare for the ramble with lunch at The Star in Waldron you can leave your car in the village and volunteers will ferry you to St Bart’s for the start. You can also fit in a visit to the Flower Festival inside the church, (see details above).The ramble will be mainly off-road on footpaths with some stiles and gentle inclines and some lane walking between the footpaths. There’ll be a quiz to solve as you walk with all kinds of weird and wonderful facts about past monarchs in the answers. Accompanied children are most welcome to walk and are encouraged to take part wearing a home-made crown. There’ll be prizes for the quiz and the most regal headgear. At All Saints’ teatime refreshments will await triumphant ramblers. Tickets to take part in this truly royal event are £5 for adults, (£4 for Friends of Waldron Churches) £2 for children and family tickets £10 (£8 for FoWC members). Register in advance and save £1 per ticket and all proceeds go towards maintaining and improving our two lovely churches. To register or for more information e-mail [email protected]

OPEN GARDENS: Three beautiful gardens in the centre of the village will be open to the public on Wednesday in aid of the Friends of Eastbourne Hospital with the funds going towards a new CT Scanner. Opening hours are 10.30am to 12.30pm and 2pm to 4.30pm and entry is by donation. There will also be sales of plants, gifts, cakes and cards.

LIFE-CHANGING VISIT: These days, school visits are more challenging that they were when I was a schoolgirl. Diana Worman reports that her grandson Sebby (who took part in several of our village plays and our film when he was younger) went with some of his fellow-students from Wadhurst Community College to Kabubu in Uganda recently, in collaboration with the Quicken Trust. The Trust is an East Sussex Charity working to support this poor village and encourages school children from the UK to raise money to visit the village and spend time helping the population there with planting crops, teaching the children to read and supplying them with essentials to improve their lives. It was apparently a hugely successful trip and felt to be life-changing for the students from Sussex.

SERVICES: This Sunday’s morning services are both at St Bartholomew’s at 8am for Holy Communion and at 10am for Parish Eucharist. Coffee and cake to follow. Evening Prayer will be at All Saints’ starting at 6pm.
