PARISH COFFEE: There’s a coffee morning in aid of church funds tomorrow, Saturday, from 10am to noon, by invitation of Arthur and Rosemary Kay at Cransford on the Little London road between Horam and Cross in Hand.

ON SONG: After the absolutely brilliant performance of Beethoven’s Ninth last Sunday finishing this year’s triumphant Mayfield Festival, our local singers (including several from Waldron) are tuning up again for Heathfield Choral Society’s May Concert. It will be on Saturday May 21 at the State Hall, Station Road starting at 7.30pm. The programme features two modern British composers, Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man and Howard Goodall’s Every Purpose under Heaven. The choir will be conducted by Brian Newman with Camerata of London and soloists Clair Lees (soprano) and Gary Marriott (tenor). Tickets are £14 if bought in advance from members of the choir or £18 on the night at the door. MORE MUSIC: There’s a different kind of music available at the pub this weekend on Saturday evening when the fabulous Con Brio comes to play at 8pm.

BROADBAND: Just shows you should never joke about the serious subject of communications. My remark of last week about the lack of mobile signal and the snail-slow speed of our broadband being a blessing in disguise was taken by some of my readers to mean that I was advocating leaving rural spots like Waldron off the comms map for ever. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I do realise that for those trying to run a business in rural areas, good broadband speeds are vital and the powers-that-be are mad not to realise that too. Which is why, when BT came knocking at my door last autumn to ask if they could put a green box in my garden to accommodate all the bells and whistles needed to speed our broadband, I practically kissed them and hastened to give my consent. Sadly, having chased them last week, I was told that we come into an area covered by some faceless body called the High Cost Forum (that is, we’re going to cost a fortune to connect) and that therefore it could be some time before our turn comes. Any ideas for bringing pressure to bear?

MACBYRD FLIES IN: The Rude Mechanicals theatre company will be starting their summer tour round the rural villages of southern England from the beginning of June. Their new play MacByrd comes to Waldron on Thursday August 11. The performance will start at 7.30pm in the field behind the pub and remember to bring your own chair and wear warm clothing. SERVICES: This Sunday’s morning services are both at All Saints’ at 8am for Holy Communion and at 10am for Matins. Coffee and cake to follow. Weddings are taking place at All Saints’ during May tomorrow, Saturday, at 11.am and at 3pm and on Saturday May 28 at 2.30pm.
