BONUS BALL: Waldron has its own Saturday Bonus Ball Club which has been going now for 15 years and under new lottery legislation, numbers are being increased to 59. Each member gets a number and pays £1 a week, payable 10 weeks in advance (or preferably longer). Each week there’s a draw and a prize of £30 goes to the member whose number is drawn as the bonus ball on the Saturday evening National Lottery draw. The remaining £29 is used for the Lucas Memorial Hall and the Sports Pavilion to support capital expenditure. So you pay a little and stand an excellent chance of winning a small windfall, while doing the village some good too. There are a few spaces in the membership available (four only on Tuesday of this week) so if you’d like to grab a spot, ring Paula Geear (01435 865638) who is now the membership secretary.

KNITTING GROUP: The Parish Knitting Group meets once a month and everyone is welcome, beginners or experienced knitters and those who want to progress or learn something new, such as crochet. This month it meets on Monday at Lark Rise at 2pm. The group will be packing up all the items they had made up to Christmas, mostly baby and children’s clothes. The Teddies have now all been sent to a remote area in the Gambia which is rarely visited by larger charities as it means crossing a major river. The baby clothes are distributed to places where they are needed through a charity called Loving Hands. The Knitting Group (now numbering about 14 if everyone comes) will discuss what their next project will be at their meeting.

DIRECTORY: Maura Fanshawe is gathering information together for a directory of activities, services, clubs, sports and meetings available in Waldron village. She has generously offered to gather the information and part fund the publication but would welcome any offers of sponsorship to share the costs. The plan is to distribute it door to door round the lanes of the village and also make it available in the pub, coffee shop, church and Lucas Hall. ROAD CLOSED: If the Roads Authority is as good as its word, the Rocks and Tanyard Hill will be closed for road repairs on January 25 for one day. Don’t hold your breath, however, as the date has already been postponed twice since its first announcement last November. I’m keeping a watching brief.

SERVICES: This Sunday is the third in Epiphany and all services will be held at St Bartholomew’s. Holy Communion will be at 8am with the President and Preacher being George Pitcher. Parish Eucharist will be at 10am when Simon Hobbs will be the president and the preacher will be George Pitcher. The service will be followed by coffee and all are welcome to stay.

SNOWDROPS: It’s been brain-freezingly cold this week but I noticed lots of cheery snowdrops already out round the lanes and my first one has just raised its head by my gate this week. Spring’s on its way.
