Waldron

BLANKETS WANTED: Our parish has close links to Family Support Work (FSW) which helps local families in need. With colder weather suddenly arriving after it's been wet and warm for so long, we've had an emergency call from FSW for warm blankets, duvets and bed linen. If you have any spares, please ring Sarah Mackenzie (01435 866419) who is co-ordinating collection.

QUIZ NIGHT: Advance warning that the pub will be holding its popular monthly quiz night on Monday January 25 starting at 7.30pm. Teams of up to six as usual, food included and a jolly evening guaranteed.

WASSAIL: The annual wassail took place last Saturday, the 25th anniversary of its revival at the pub. (There’s a story there but not for this column). The Cock a Snook Morris and Winter Solstice Mummers performed out in the square and after the ceremony of dowsing the roots of the apple trees in the garden, there were songs and music in the bar and a collection taken for St Wilfrid’s Hospice. Judith Clark sponsored a new Wassail Bowl which received its first outing this year. A promising beginning for 2016, but I wish it would stop raining.

BONUS BALL: Waldron has its own Saturday Bonus Ball Club which has been going now for 15 years and under new lottery legislation, numbers are being increased to 59. Each member gets a number and pays £1 a week, payable 10 weeks in advance (or preferably longer). Each week there’s a draw and a prize of £30 goes to the member whose number is drawn as the bonus ball on the Saturday evening National Lottery draw. The remaining £29 is used for the Lucas Memorial Hall and the Sports Pavilion to support capital expenditure. So you pay a little and stand an excellent chance of winning a small windfall, while doing the village some good too. There are a small number of spaces in the membership available (six on Tuesday of this week) so if you’d like to grab a spot, ring Paula Geear (01435 865638) who is now the membership secretary. First come first served, so don’t put it off or you’ll miss your chance.

SERVICES: This Sunday is the second in Epiphany and all services will be held at All Saints’. Holy Communion will be at 8am with the President and Preacher being George Pitcher. Parish Matins will be at 10am when Benjamin Tyler will be the leader and the preacher will be Christo Corfield. The service will be followed by coffee and all are welcome to stay.
