WATERWORKS: Yes, don't relax yet. The roadworks may have finished in Tanyard Hill, but the waterworks have now started on Whitehouse Lane and are scheduled to continue until December 21, or if the original calculations were correct, five weeks from November 26 (which means we may have the Clancy Docwra team in the village until New Year.) Lots of muttering '˜heigh-ho' and not a lot of '˜Ho ho ho' for those of us hoping that Father Christmas might have dropped in the odd parcel between now and Christmas. Just don't run out of oil, folks.

AT THE PUB: The Star Christmas menu is now out so ask a member of staff if you’d like a look at it. Early indications are that the pub will be open on Christmas Day from midday until 2pm. Boxing Day will be closed all day, and there will be dinner served on New Year’s Eve. On New Year’s Day there will be the traditional brunch from 10am including bubbly. Those of us who boast about a dry January can postpone starting the month until January 2, special dispensation from the New Year fairy.

CRACKING CRAFTS: The Friends of Waldron Churches are organising a Cracking Christmas Craftshop this Sunday from 12.30pm to 3.30pm following the Advent Carol Service at 10am at All Saints’ Church in the village. Father Christmas will be in attendance and there’ll be entertainment by Wriggles and Tiggles, face-painting, clay modelling and opportunities for both children and parents to make their own Christmas decorations. Refreshments will be on offer and will include mulled wine and mince pies. Entry is £1 for adults and children under 16 years will be charged 50p.

LOOKING AHEAD: December is always busy, so here are a couple of dates for your diary. The last meeting of the Singing for Fun group this year will be on Monday December 10 at 2pm at Cross in Hand Methodist Hall at the top of Firgrove Road. It’s the usual format but I’m betting there may be traditional Christmas songs I the mix. On Thursday December 13 the Waldron Country Market is a special one, to celebrate 30 years of its existence. It’s at Holy Cross Priory and at 11am there’ll be cutting of a cake (very appropriate) and founder member Dawn Chambers will blow out the candles. There will also be a tribute to Gill Temple who died this year, another stalwart from the first days of the market and long-term treasurer to the market. It will be officially declared open at 11.10am and cake and soft drinks will be provided to everyone attending.

SERVICES: This Sunday services will be held at All Saints’ in Waldron. Holy Communion will be at 8am with Lucy Murdoch presiding and preaching. The Advent Carol Service will be at 10am and will be followed by the Christmas Craftshop (see above). It’s at this time that Family Support Work (FSW) asks us to bring gifts suitable for children (unwrapped please) for distribution to families in need. Presents for boys are particularly difficult to find, so any ideas are welcome.
