Warm welcome extended to Sainsbury's by Bognor

A warm welcome is being extended by Bognor Regis' councillors to Sainsbury's.

The town council has given the same verdict on the retailer's proposals to open a store as it did for Asda.

No objection has been raised by the council to Sainsbury's plans to demolish the former Lec factory buildings along the A29 Shripney Road and build a 55,000sq ft store in their place.

Sainsbury's plans also include a petrol filling station, a car wash and a jet wash along with the creation of new access road from the A29.

The town council has insisted on a legal agreement being signed by Sainsbury's to provide some money to help the town centre shops counter the impact of having another major retailer on its outskirts if the plans get the go ahead.

Cllr Ken Scutt said: "We have said exactly the same as we did for Asda, which is fair enough.

"It will be very interesting to see what the development control committee at Arun does now. They chucked Asda out. I doubt if they will chuck Sainsbury's out."

Cllr Paul Wells commented: "It's of paramount importance that any agreement that comes from the Lec site has the very clear goal of helping the town centre.

"Whether it had been Asda or Sainsbury's, or whoever coming to the outskirts of the town, there has to be some benefit from them to the town centre."

No objection was raised either by the town council to the retention of the Widdowson Building on the Lec site to continue to provide a base for a refrigeration firm.
