Warning after Bognor Regis woman sexually assaulted in Chichester

A WARNING has gone out to always make sure you get into a licensed cab after a woman was assaulted in Chichester.

Police are appealing for witnesses after the 25-year-old Bognor Regis woman got into a car she believed was a taxi in Chichester, near a McColls newsagents.

A spokesman from Chichester District Council’s licensing team said: “When going to meet their vehicle, we would urge people to check that it is displaying the correct signs and plates – these include licence plates, door signs and driver’s badge.

“If it does not, then we would advise you not to get in as it will not be licensed or insured to carry you.”

The woman was sexually assaulted by the driver during the journey after he stopped the car around 3.30am on September 26.

The car police are looking for was described as slight grey silver, possibly a MPV type, and had a white number plate with the numbers 1099 or 099 in it.

The spokesman added: “We also encourage people to follow a few simple safety tips when using taxis: try to book vehicles with the operator in advance; check that the vehicle you are meeting is the one you booked, and try to agree the fare when booking with the operator.”
