Warning made to Littlehampton students not paying for live TV

Over the past year a total of 19 people, aged between 18 and 25, were found to be watching live TV without a licence.

This puts the town on a par with Worthing and ahead of Chichester and Shoreham, which had 13 and seven people caught out, respectively.

However, Bognor Regis had the most people evading payment, with 24 young people having been uncovered.

Now, TV Licensing is reminding people – particularly university students – to pay for live TV or face a fine of up to £1,000 if caught watching it.

Martin Dyan, of TV Licensing, said: “On average, students own three devices capable of streaming live TV so it is important they understand the law when it comes TV and devices. Watching live TV on any device is illegal, without a TV licence, and could result in prosecution and fine of up to £1,000.

“If you’re a student and you are worried about paying for a TV licence, get in touch.

“We know some people struggle to pay, which is why we have many payment options available to spread the cost in smaller, more manageable chunks.

“Once covered, you’ll be able to relax and enjoy TV legally.”

A licence is needed to watch or record live TV, on any device, including a laptop, tablet or mobile phone.

Figures by TV Licensing reveals that more than 27,000 young people in the UK were watching TV illegally.

Recent research by TV Licensing shows one-in-ten undergraduates believe they won’t get caught watching live TV without a licence, while 24 per cent think they can’t be caught watching live TV on a computer, laptop or mobile device.
