WARNING TO RURAL HOME-OWNERS

Sussex Police are urging residents living in a rural setting across East Sussex to be vigilant.

It follows a number of evening robberies where a group of up to five people have forced their way into the homes of elderly residents and stolen cash from inside the property.

Residents are asked to be on the look out for any suspicious activity in their area, in particular a group of four or five people who are likely to be using a vehicle.

Police are also interested in any information about any unfamiliar people knocking on doors. This may be in preparation for a later offence.

Incidents have taken place between 7pm and 10.30pm and have been reported in rural villages off the A22 such as Gun Hill on the 14 November, Crawley Down on 21 November, Laughton on 24 November, and most recently Chelwood Gate on Monday night (27 November).

Police are advising vulnerable people, especially those living in isolated rural areas, to ensure their answer their front doors with the chain on, especially after dark, and to keep their front and back doors locked. If someone comes to your door and you are in any doubt, don't open it and call the police immediately.

Chief Inspector Neil Honnor, Wealden District Commander, said, "Although no one has been seriously injured in these incidents they are appalling attacks on elderly or vulnerable members of our community. The offenders are targeting secluded properties in rural locations along the A22 and I urge members of these communities to be extra vigilant, and if they see anyone, in particular a group of 4/5 people acting suspiciously or anything unusual in their area, they should contact us immediately."
