Wassail night of tradition in Lewes

The log fire will blaze and the candles will be lit at The Elephant and Castle in Lewes tomorrow (Saturday).

The pub is hosting Lewes Saturday Folk Club’s Wassail Night from 8-11pm.

People are invited to bring seasonal songs and tunes to the event and perhaps a twig from their own apple tree for an indoor wassailing ceremony to share in any blessing it might give.

They will be serving Twelfth Cake – orange peel, crystallised ginger, honey, spices and rum – and a wassail bowl of hot spiced old ale. All are welcome, especially if they would like to sing or play.

Lewes Saturday Folk Club members mostly sing and play traditional music from the British Isles, but they enjoy other styles as well. They always start off with some English dance tunes for anyone with an instrument to join in.
