Waste In Action launch

A new project to help local people and small businesses across East Sussex reduce their waste was officially launched at the Azur Marina Pavilion in St Leonards.

The three-year "Waste in Action" project, which receives EU funding, sees the County Council teaming up with partners from Rouen in France to bring together public, private, voluntary and higher education organisations to minimise waste and reduce energy consumption.

Bringing together these various groups from Upper Normandy and East Sussex means they will be able to share their knowledge and experience about waste management and training, helping small businesses, local schools and householders

Activities will include:

'¢ household and commercial composting trials,

'¢ waste audits in schools and small businesses,

'¢ free advice and,

'¢ a joint training programme.

During the launch, French visitors were shown the Friary Gardens - a composting demonstration site at the Ridge, Hastings, where local people who wish to start home composting can get ideas and advice.

Councillor Matthew Lock, Lead Member for Transport and Environment said, "I hope that by working together we can really help people make a difference. By composting more we can reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill.

"Friary Gardens shows a range of different composting bins so people can compost their food waste whether they have a large garden or no garden at all."

The Waste in Action project is part financed by the European Union, through the Interreg IVA France (Channel) programme. For more information about the Interreg project please visit our website: www.eastsussex.gov.uk.
