Business owner Steve Boyes told the Middy that, since before Christmas, foul smelling waste water had been leaking out of a pothole in Keymer Road.

Mr Boyes, who is director of Martin & Co letting agents, Keymer Road, said the spot is less than 50 metres from the train station, and the road is used by many commuters and by children going to and from school.

He said Southern Water engineers had been out to look at the problem.

“When the engineers came and looked at the discharge from the pot hole they confirmed to my staff that this was not clean water and even let my branch manager smell the water they had collected in a jar,” he said.

“He still can’t get the smell out of his nostrils!”

However, the problem had not been resolved.

A Southern Water representative told the Middy that the problem was caused by a collapsed surface water sewer.

She said tests had shown that the water did not contain ammonia, therefore it was not actual sewage, and the problem had been referred to the county council.

Approached for a comment, West Sussex COunty Council said they were sending inspectors to examine the problem.

This week, Mr Boyes confirmed that county council contractors had applied a temporary fix, which had stopped the leak.
