Water bills to rise by three per cent

Consumers in Bexhill will pay three per cent more for water supplies in the coming year, South East Water announced on Tuesday.

The move will add 8 to the average bill, bringing it to 169 and come into effect on April 1.

In 2004, Ofwat set limits on the prices water and sewerage companies could charge customers between 2005-2010. Ofwat will finalise the new limits on prices for the period 2010-2015 in November.

Ofwat chief executive officer Regina Finn said: "We needed to make some tough decisions back in 2004 when we set prices. Investment was vital but we needed to balance this with keeping bills down. And across the whole of England and Wales our work has kept customers' bills around 100 lower than they would otherwise have been.

"Investment between 2005 -2010 will improve the colour and clarity of its water supplies for customers, and help continue to deliver a safe, reliable supply. There is still room for improvement, but progress has been made."
