Water water everywhere

A LEAKING water main is causing misery for one Sompting woman.

Gallons of water have been gushing from the pipe outside Annette Simmons's home in Montague Court for the last month.

"I went into the garden to water some plants about four weeks ago and noticed the water," she told the Lancing Herald.

"It's been like that ever since.

"It's got to be leaking about a gallon of water a minute that's 30,000 gallons over three weeks. Where's it all going?"

Other people in the flats have also complained about the loss of water pressure since the "leak" and are also concerned the water could damage their homes.

Annette contacted Worthing- based Southern Water, but apart from one initial visit, no one has been back.

"It sounds like someone is running a bath outside the window," she said.

"I've got to keep the window closed because of the noise.

"The whole manhole cover has sunk and so has the lawn. If we have prolonged heavy rain the whole lot could fall away."

A spokesman for Southern Water said the pipe had not been fixed because it was privately owned.

"We own the pipes up to the boundary of the property, the pavement, or the fence, and the rest of the pipe is privately owned," he said.

"Most people are not aware they buy a property and the water pipes.

"As a gesture of goodwill, Southern Water carries out one free repair, but our contractors are busy and work has to be prioritised."

The company's spokesman added the leak should be repaired within the next few weeks.
