Weekly bin collections to return to Rother?

ROTHER District Council may consider bringing back weekly bin collections.

The authority introduced fortnightly bin collections across the district in 2007, to a deluge of complaints.

The roll-out of the scheme was also delayed with some residents in Battle forced to wait until spring 2008 for their green bins.

But last week Eric Pickles, the secretary of state for communities and local government, revealed Government plans to offer financial support to local authorities who want to restore weekly rubbish collections.

A £250m fund is being set up to help local authorities in England switch from fortnightly to weekly bin rounds.

Although Rother has not said it will scrap fortnightly collections, a spokesman has said the council will look at the details of the Government scheme when they become available.

The spokesman said: “The Government announcement was unexpected and certainly interesting.

“We will await the detail of the scheme being proposed and will obviously consider its implications seriously.

“We are currently working closely on waste collection with our other local authority colleagues in East Sussex, and this Government initiative will of course be considered as part of the discussions we are having.”
