Welcome surprise for Bognor Land Army woman

A 91-year-old Bognor Regis woman has finally received recognition for milking cows during the second world war.

Clare Wareing was given the badge and certificate signed by Gordon Brown for her time in the Women's Land Army.

The items completely surprised Clare more than 60 years after she helped with the war effort.

Her niece, who lives in the Midlands, made the arrangements after the prime minister announced his intention to ensure the efforts of those who were in the Land Army were acknowledged.

Born in Birmingham, Clare had no experience of the country life when she entered the Land Army. She remembers the hardest part of the experience was getting up very early in the morning to milk the cows by hand before the milk lorry arrived to collect the churns.

"It wasn't much fun cutting sugar beet very early on a freezing morning in the middle of Dorset," Clare recalled.

"But it's like everything '“ there's good bits and bad bits. Most of the time it was quite fun."

She still gets involved with the weekly garden club at St Joseph's Residential Care Home in Albert Road, where she lives, to continue her experiences with nature.
