Well done Pebsham

PEBSHAM Primary School children will be among pupils from 45 East Sussex primary schools and six secondary schools to benefit from a pilot project to provide one-to-one tuition.

The County Council is one of ten local authorities in the country to be chosen to take part in the two year pilot which starts in September 2007.

The pilot will focus on children in key stage 2 (8 - 11 years) and key stage 3 (11-14years).

There will be detailed analysis to identify children who are not making the expected levels of progress.

Once pupils have been identified, they will be given extra support. This will include up to 10 hours extra one-to-one tuition in English and / or Maths. This tuition will be made available at a time considered to be most beneficial and will be given by a qualified teacher.

Pupils' progress will be tracked and regularly reported to the Department for Education and Skills.

Pupils will also take shorter tests when their teacher decides that they are ready and will be given a national curriculum level based on their results.

The DfES is funding the pilot, including the cost of tuition and payments to schools.

The county council has appointed a pilot leader to take this work forward and she will work with English and maths consultants to support the teachers.

County lead cabinet member for children's and adults' services Cllr Keith Glazier said: "East Sussex County Council put in a very strong bid for this funding and I am very pleased that pupils in East Sussex are being given this opportunity."

If the pilot proves a success it may be extended to all schools by the DfES.
