‘Well loved’ BT manager died at Eastbourne cliffs

Jose Roel was described as someone who was always trying to help others at the inquest at Eastbourne Town Hall.

His wife Maria Perez said in a statement, “He was a nice man, looked after his family and had many friends.

“He was very approachable and always worked very hard.”

She said he loved sports, including football and tennis, and loved to travel.

He had worked at British Telecom for 30 years, she said.

“He was a friendly person,” Mrs Perez said, “He was very well loved and was always trying to help everybody.”

The inquest heard Mr Roel had suffered from mental health issues, including depression.

The 47-year-old, from Barking, was found dead at Beachy Head on May 11 this year.

Chaplains had raised the alarm after they found his empty vehicle parked in a lay-by at the clifftop, the inquest heard.

Detective Sergeant Joanne Bott ruled out any third party involvement in his death.

Coroner Alan Craze said, “There isn’t any doubt in my mind that he did what he did with the intention of bringing his life to an end. Sadly he took his own life.”

He recorded a conclusion of suicide and expressed his condolences to Mr Roel’s family.
